BSE Clearing Brings 3-Day SLB Contracts, Giving Short-Term Securities Lending a Boost

Mumbai, Aug 17: BSE Clearing has introduced three-working-day contracts under its Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) segment, giving investors and traders a simpler and more flexible way to manage short-term securities requirements.

Under the new arrangement, when securities are borrowed, the initial transaction will be completed on T+1, meaning the next working day. The borrowed securities will then be returned through the second leg of the transaction on T+3, or the third working day, excluding market holidays. The facility will initially cover securities that are eligible for trading in the equity derivatives segment.

SLB allows an investor who owns shares to lend them to another market participant for a fixed period in return for a lending fee. The borrower gets temporary access to those shares for permitted market activities, such as meeting delivery requirements or short-selling.

The new three-day option is particularly useful for participants who need securities for only a short period. Earlier, a longer contract could be inconvenient when the actual requirement lasted just a few days. The shorter structure allows the duration of the transaction to better match the participant’s immediate needs.

For investors holding eligible shares, the facility can provide an additional opportunity to earn income from securities that may otherwise remain unused. For borrowers, it offers quicker and more convenient access to shares when short-term requirements arise.

The move could also help boost activity and liquidity in the securities-lending market. A wider and more flexible borrowing facility can make it easier for market participants to obtain securities when needed, potentially supporting smoother trading and more efficient price discovery.

The initiative comes as India’s capital markets continue to develop with greater emphasis on efficient settlement, improved liquidity and wider participation. A shorter SLB contract gives traders and investors another tool to manage temporary positions without taking on a longer commitment.

The new contracts will operate through the existing automated, screen-based system and established clearing and risk-management framework. This allows participants to use the shorter-tenure facility within the existing market infrastructure.

Overall, BSE Clearing’s three-day SLB contracts could make short-term securities lending more accessible, flexible and efficient, while encouraging investors to put their holdings to productive use and giving borrowers greater choice in managing short-term market requirements.
