
New Delhi, Feb 28: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang attended the 31st Foundation Day celebration of the Akhil Sikkim Khas Chhetri Bahun Kalyan Sangh at Rangpo Ground, describing the occasion as a symbol of unity, dignity, and collective strength of the Chhetri–Bahun community and the wider Khas society.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister termed the day a “golden milestone” in Sikkim’s journey of unity, identity, and progress. He stated that the Khas community forms a strong pillar of the state’s development and emphasised that when communities stand united, Sikkim advances with greater strength. He said Khas Day stands as a shining example of this spirit of solidarity.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister announced that Pakyong Airport would be renamed in honour of freedom fighter Trilochan Pokhrel, as a tribute to his contributions.
Paying homage to the immense role of the Khas community, he acknowledged their contributions across public service, politics, literature, education, security forces, entrepreneurship, arts, and social leadership. He noted that their dedication has significantly shaped the social, cultural, and administrative fabric of the state.
Highlighting key initiatives undertaken by the government to ensure dignity and self-respect for all communities, the Chief Minister listed several measures:
· Declaration of February 26 as an official Government Holiday.
· Allocation of land and ₹20 crore for the construction of Khas Bhawan in Gangtok.
· Declaration of October 5 as N.B. Bhandari Jayanti (Birth Anniversary) — a Government Holiday.
· Recognition of August 20 as a Government Holiday commemorating the recognition of the Nepali language.
· Provision of 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections.
· Formation of the Sikkim State High-Level Committee for the inclusion of 12 left-out communities in the Scheduled Tribe list.
· Launch of the N.B. Bhandari Fellowship, offering up to ₹50 lakh for higher education in top global universities.
· Appointment of Nepali Primary Teachers and strengthening of the Nepali language in governance.
· Continued efforts to uphold dignity, identity, and equal opportunity for all.
Reaffirming the government’s guiding principle of “Unite and Serve,” the Chief Minister stated that the progress of the Khas community with dignity and recognition strengthens the unity and collective spirit of Sikkim.
