Wall Street Faces Fresh Pressure as Bond Yields Surge Ahead of Fed Decision

New York, Sep 15: US stock markets were headed for a weaker opening on Tuesday as investors reacted to a sharp rise in Treasury yields and renewed concerns over inflation and interest rates.

Wall Street Faces Fresh Pressure as Bond Yields Surge Ahead of Fed Decision

Futures linked to the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq were trading lower, signalling a cautious start to the session. The biggest concern for investors was the 10-year US Treasury yield, which moved above the 5 per cent mark, reaching levels not seen since 2007.

The rise in bond yields is putting additional pressure on equities because higher borrowing costs can reduce corporate investment and make bonds relatively more attractive to investors. Growth-oriented technology companies are particularly sensitive to changes in interest rates because higher yields can weigh on their valuations.

Investors are also closely watching the Federal Reserve, which began its two-day policy meeting on Tuesday. Markets are expecting a rate increase, while investors will be paying close attention to the central bank’s guidance on inflation and the future path of interest rates.

Rising crude oil prices are adding another layer of uncertainty. Brent crude was trading above $100 a barrel amid continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, raising concerns that higher energy costs could add to inflationary pressures and make it harder for central banks to ease monetary policy.

Wall Street is also dealing with renewed volatility in technology stocks. Concerns about the pace and risks surrounding artificial intelligence development have weighed on several technology and semiconductor companies, adding to the pressure on the Nasdaq.

The weakness follows Monday’s session, when the Dow fell 0.3 per cent, the S&P 500 declined 0.5 per cent and the Nasdaq dropped 0.6 per cent. Despite the decline, the major US indices remain substantially higher for the year.

For global investors, the combination of higher US bond yields, elevated oil prices and uncertainty over monetary policy is becoming an important market signal. A sustained rise in Treasury yields could increase global borrowing costs and influence capital flows across emerging markets, including India.

Investors are therefore expected to remain cautious until the Federal Reserve meeting concludes and policymakers provide greater clarity on the interest-rate outlook.
